Malaysia’s Halal Food Sector Soars, Predicted Sales of RM50 Billion

The local halal food sector in Malaysia is experiencing significant growth, with sales projected to reach RM50 billion this year, according to the Religious Affairs Minister Mohd Na’im Mokhtar. The government is actively working towards establishing Malaysia as the global hub for halal products, implementing initiatives to enhance product quality and attract foreign investments. To streamline the halal certification process, digitization programs like the MyeHALAL system application have been introduced, saving entrepreneurs time and facilitating certification applications. Additionally, the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim) has developed the SmartHalal and Verify Halal applications, providing consumers and the industry with comprehensive information on halal certification.

At the launch of Sahabat Halal IPT at Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia, the Religious Affairs Minister highlighted the university’s role as a spokesperson for Jakim and state religious departments. Universiti Sains Islam Malaysia will disseminate knowledge related to halal issues and management, particularly among students. The university, serving as the coordination center, aims to develop a training module for members of Sahabat Halal IPT, with 39 students already enlisted.

In addressing a different matter, Mohd Na’im Mokhtar mentioned that the Muzakarah Committee of the National Council for Islamic Religious Affairs and Jakim will convene to address the issue of next-of-kin being responsible for paying outstanding taxes left by deceased individuals. This initiative aims to alleviate confusion among Muslims following differing opinions on this matter between Penang Mufti, Wan Salim Wan Mohd Noor, and Pahang Mufti, Abdul Rahman Osman. The meeting will provide clarity and ensure uniformity in the approach taken.

The growth of the halal food industry in Malaysia underscores the country’s commitment to advancing its position as a global leader in the halal sector. With the introduction of digital solutions and initiatives to improve product quality, Malaysia is poised to attract more investments and further solidify its reputation as a center for halal excellence.
