Each helps in a different situation. Understanding what they do can help you choose coverage that fits your needs and budget.
Medical card: For treatment costs
A medical card helps pay for eligible treatment costs, such as hospitalisation and surgery due to illness or an accident. For example, if you need surgery for appendicitis, your medical card may help pay the hospital bill according to your plan’s terms.
Before choosing a plan, check its coverage limits, panel hospitals, waiting periods, exclusions and any amount you must pay yourself. Having a medical card does not mean every treatment is covered in full.
Life takaful: For those who depend on you
Life takaful provides a financial benefit if the covered person dies, subject to the certificate’s terms. Some plans also provide a benefit for total and permanent disability.
If your spouse, children or parents depend on your income, this benefit can help them meet daily expenses and financial commitments. In simple terms, a medical card helps with eligible treatment bills, while life takaful helps provide money for your family.
Personal accident coverage: For accidents
Personal accident coverage provides benefits if an accident causes injury, disability or death, depending on the plan’s terms. Some plans also offer benefits for treatment or rehabilitation following an accident.
For example, if you fall and fracture a bone, you may be eligible to claim under a personal accident plan. However, this coverage generally does not replace a medical card for illnesses such as dengue. Check which events and injuries are covered before signing up.
Which should you prioritise?
Start with your own circumstances and your family’s needs:
- Concerned about hospital bills? Check the medical coverage you already have, including employer benefits.
- Have family members who depend on your income? Consider life takaful.
- Drive frequently or face a higher risk of accidents? Check whether personal accident coverage would complement your existing plans.
No single choice suits everyone. If your budget is limited, prioritise the protection gap that could have the greatest financial impact, then review your coverage as your needs change.
Check before making a decision
Read the product disclosure sheet and takaful certificate to understand the benefits, coverage limits, exclusions and waiting periods. Make sure the contributions fit your budget and are manageable over the long term.
